Introduction: Teaching Japanese Postwar Fiction in the English-Language Classroom

This volume is devoted to teaching works of Japanese fiction---novels, short stories, and manga (graphic novels and comics)---produced following the end of Japan's war with China, America, and their allies in 1945. The title is an expedient shortcut for the unwieldy Teaching Japanese fiction written since 1945 rather than an effort at periodization. Some would declare that the postwar period ended in the era of high growth in the sixties and seventies; others mark the end of the postwar period with the death of the Shōwa emperor in 1989 and collapse of the eighties bubble economy in the early nineties . Still others insist that Japan remains in the postwar era. As Christopher Gerteis and Timothy George write, There are no simple answers to the question of when or whether the postwar period has ended. Rather than engage in debates over periodization, this volume rejects literary history as an organizational scheme and thus juxtaposes writers from different generations in service of themes of interest to teachers. It begins with a questioning of the borders of Japanese literature, calling attention to the shortcomings of using the nation to delineate the bounds of creativity, and continues to discuss themes such as gender and sexuality, family, war and memory, animals, and disaster. In addition to offering new ideas for teacher in Japanese literary studies, this volume suggests ways to incorporate a wide range of post-1945 Japanese narrative fiction in courses on world literature, history, literary theory, food studies, and much more.
