The article discusses the effects of writing standards in the study of social sciences. The alignment of curricula with state standards gave emphasis on writing, reading and mathematics. To support the goals of state standards, social studies teachers could apply different methods to engage the students in effective and meaningful writing activities. The unit newspaper project is an activity that consolidates all types of writing and helps in the measurement of student proficiency.
