Gender and the Great Recession: A Critical Look at the Causes, Outcomes, and Policy Responses

In this thesis, I examine the causes and outcomes of the 2007–2009 recession, and the subsequent policy measures through a gender lens. From a feminist economic perspective, I examine the roles played by gender and racial inequalities in the recession, the gendered and racial outcomes of the recession and the policy responses, in particular the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the policies outlined in the 2015 President Obama’s State of the Union Address.
