What is Spanish identity? How can we define Spanish identity when it has historically excluded
minority women? How can we understand Afro-descendant women's construction and
negotiation of Spanish identity through their representation in contemporary literature? In the
texts, Ser mujer negra en España and Hija del camino I look at contemporary representations of
Afro-Spanish women, drawing from Black feminist theory, afrofeminismo, decolonization, and
intersectionality. I focus on the articulation of intersectional Afro-Spanish identities in the
protagonists and the role that traditional Eurocentric beauty standards play in the formation of
these identities. This thesis situates written works by Black Spanish women at the forefront of
Spanish literature, a genre that has traditionally been occupied by white Spanish men.
