Professor Manganaro’s lecture, given at Dickinson College, Pennsylvania, illustrates, through a close reading of Chapter XI of I Malavoglia, the modernity of the conflict between the young “rebellious” ’Ntoni and his family members more a!ached to their village and its traditions. The expression «there where the sun dies» may be interpreted as a metaphor for the American continent, destination of millions of young Italians like ’Ntoni between the XIX and XX centuries. The drama of emigration seems to never end and continues today, but in the opposite direction, with the arrival of thousands of young men and women on the same shores from which the young Malavoglia departed more than a century ago.
