One of the more talented artists to adopt Impressionism's loose brushwork and bright palette in early 20th-century America was Henry Ryan MacGinnis (1875-1962). Painted en plein air , his landscapes depict a variety of settings including his native Indiana, artists' colonies in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, his summer home in Orford, New Hampshire, and his retirement house in Fairlee, Vermont. MacGinnis exhibited alongside some of the best-known painters of is era, among them William Marritt Chase, Mary Cassatt, Ernest Lawson, and Childe Hassam. He was also a member of such prestigious organizations as the Society of American Artists, Salmagundi Club, Audubon Artists, Society of Western Artists, and Allied Artists of America. In addition, MacGinnis spent 40 years teaching art in Trenton, New Jersey, painted murals, and won numerous portrait commissions from prominent politicians and businessmen. In spite of his many successes, MacGinnis remains relatively unknown today: In the 47 years since his death, his works have remained in private hands, with limited opportunities for public display.
