A professor of philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh for more than 40 years, Robert Brandom has written extensively and insightfully on a wide range of topics, including language, mind, logic, norms, freedom, philosophical method, pragmatism (Brandom, 2011), Immanuel Kant (Brandom, 2009), G.W.F. Hegel (Brandom, 2019), and Wilfrid Sellars (Brandom, 2015). For some purposes it is useful to see him as having many different interests, but to introduce you to his work, here I will treat him as having at least one big interest that subsumes many others. He seeks to understand what is distinctive about human thought, the sort of thought we characteristically engage in. After briefly clarifying the question that guides hem, I will present a few of his most intriguing and controversial claims, hoping to spur you to inquire further.
