August 4 was a busy day for me at MAA MathFest last year. After giving a talk in the morning, I joined a meet-up organized by @katemath to chat about standards-based grading. After lunch, I attended the @maanow prize session. As editor of Math Horizons, I was thrilled to see MAA president @mathyawp present the Trevor Evans Award to @Thalesdisciple for his article The Way the Billiard Ball Bounces (February 2015). The afternoon was full of meetings with dedicated MAA members like @CardColm, @timchartier, @swirlgirl31415, @dtkung, @jajenson681, and @BlockMonoid. That evening, I wrote to the award-winning high school teacher @MrHonner--who'd previously interviewed @stevenstrogatz for Math Horizons--about writing an editorial for an upcoming issue. Twitter often gets a bad rap as the social media platform in which people post photos of their meals and their cats and in which celebrities and politicians exchange jabs. But for me, Twitter has been a place to learn new mathematics, build a professional network, and advance my career.
