In addition to its famous motto of “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity,” France is known for two things: its cuisine and its complicated history with religion. In contemporary France, these two ideas, food and religion, are linked in a complex way with regard to halal meat. Perhaps representing a departure from the country's Catholic and European tradition, this central staple of Muslim cuisine challenges some people's definition of what it means to be French.
