The Point of Pointlessness: Healing Through Snapshots of Anime

Public Deposited

This paper analyzes a specific genre of anime called “iyashikei,” whose aim is to explicitly provide a sense of relaxation and calm to the viewers. The historical context of “iyashi,” the Japanese notion of healing is briefly explained in the beginning of the paper. Then, using scholar Paul Roquet’s analysis of ambient literature, ideas on how traits of ambient literature manifest themselves in iyashikei anime are explored. This paper then proposes how iyashikei anime heal people through a plotless narrative that lets the viewer simply focus on the present moments of the characters, and how this differs from other anime genres. Throughout this paper, three iyashikei anime that are representative of the genre (Laid Back Camp, Non Non Biyori, and Flying Witch) are analyzed to show the unique elements of iyashikei anime.
