This thesis explores the constant negotiation between cultures for Mexican migrant workers in the United States. To examine this negotiation between the American and Mexican cultures, Tomás Rivera’s novel …y no se lo tragó la tierra is the main work consulted to reveal the experiences of Mexican migrant workers in greater depth. Identity is the first theme analyzed in Rivera’s novel because the protagonist, who is also the narrator, is an unnamed character. The protagonist/ narrator is also a Mexican migrant worker, thus representing the identity issues other Mexican migrant workers experience. Next, the three recurring themes of religion, gender roles, and individuality within the community, are analyzed and reveal the tension that exists between the Mexican and American cultures as well as the mixture of these two cultures. These four themes along with the lack of chronology between chapters and coherence between characters declare the narrator and protagonist as a metaphor for all the Mexican migrant workers who experience the negotiation between American and Mexican cultures. This negotiation is a constant ethical dilemma that leads to identity formation and the creation of a new third culture, a mixture of Mexican and American cultures. In the same way that identity constantly changes throughout a human’s life, this new third culture constantly changes throughout the migratory lifestyle of a Mexican migrant worker. For this reason, this thesis argues that Mexican migrant workers are constantly capable of creating a third culture.
